Welcome

Sketch by Sir John Lavery, RA
“I valued Cunninghame Graham like rubies. We’ll never see his like again.”~ Hugh MacDiarmid
Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936), known as Don Roberto, was one of the most consequential figures of his era. He is best known as the co-founder, with Keir Hardie, of the Scottish Labour Party, forerunner of the modern Labour Party; later as a co-founder of the National Party of Scotland and honorary founding president of the Scottish National Party. But in a long and remarkable life he was many other things besides: a horseman, adventurer and traveller; a radical politician; a fighter for social justice; the author of many books; a visionary and humanitarian.

This site offers an introduction to the man, his life and his work, in line with the aims of the Cunninghame Graham Society (here). It provides biographical and bibliographical information, along with links to external resources, and news of talks and events, for scholars, aficionados, and those who are entirely new to the man and his extraordinary life.
For the sake of brevity we refer to him as 'RBCG' throughout this site.
We welcome you and would invite you to become a member of the Society (here) for a modest annual subscription of £12.
Check out our Facebook page here for news of forthcoming events.
The brand mark used by RBCG throughout his life, in books, letters and other documents, was proposed to him by his gaucho companions in Argentina, who also bestowed on him the title 'Don Roberto'. The base shape is the brand of the then recently assassinated President Urquiza, 'differenced' by RBCG with a circle around the upper stem. Use it wherever you see it to return to the top of the page.
